Cultural and Religious Tourism in Ikaria Island
Having known times of great splendour both in the antiquity (with its 4 ancient cities: Thermai, today's Therma, Drakanon, actual Fanari, Oinoe or Dolihi, today's Kampos, and Tavropolio in the cove of Nas) and Byzantine times, Ikaria presents significant cultural interest, with the remnants of these distant times (e.g. ruins of the famous ancient temple of Artemis in the cove of Nas, the Koskinas' castle, fortress dating from the Byzantine period - 10th century, near the village Kosoikia).
Finally, the extant 6 monasteries and more than 300 churches (one of which is protochristian) and country chapels found scattered in the island constitute an evidence of the intense religious feeling of its inhabitants, making Ikaria an ideal destination for religious tourism.
