Traditional Feasts
At the Ikarian feasts, a widespread custom in the island, the people eat traditional festival food, like "prothesis" (kiddling meat soup), drink delicious local wine and dance to the sound of the Ikarian violin and other traditional musical instruments. The picturesque festivals not only offer entertainment, but are a substantial fund-raising source, since the festival proceeds are always used for purposes beneficial to the village organizing the feast. Local Products Ikaria produces exceptional oil, grapes from which the renowned since the antiquity "pramnios" wine was first produced, raisin, walnuts, almonds and tasty apricots. It is also known for its scented honey. Ikaria exports slate plates, used in luxurious buildings.
